The Holidays, Your Way
Thanksgiving dinners, tree lightings, and Santa lines can be wonderful — or a lot. Your person gets to decide what the season looks like. Here are the community meals, quiet hours, and calmer celebrations we found across Oregon, with ideas that make the days easier.
Make it fit your person
- Preview the day together — Talk through who will be there, what will happen, and how long it lasts. A photo schedule or a short social story helps.
- Plan a quiet space — A bedroom, a porch, or the car can be a reset spot. Pack headphones and a comfort item.
- Food their way — Bring a safe food or two, skip the pressure to try new dishes, and plan around allergies.
- Shorter is a win — Arrive after the busiest part, come for dessert only, or leave early. Leaving happy counts.
- Choose the calmer session — Many Santa visits, light displays, and holiday markets offer sensory-friendly hours or quieter weekday times.
- Traditions can flex — A video call, a small Friendsgiving, or a walk instead of a crowded dinner are all real celebrations.
- Watch the clock and the roads — Sunset is close to 4:30 PM by Thanksgiving. Check TripCheck before holiday-weekend drives and leave extra time.
- Care for the caregiver — November is National Family Caregivers Month. Ask your case manager or personal agent what respite options your person’s plan allows.

Choose what fits you
Every person and family is different. Before you go, a quick call or message to the organizer can confirm any of these so an outing matches your own interests, comfort, and needs.
- Sensory level — How loud, bright, or busy will it be? Are quieter spaces available?
- Crowd size — A large event or a smaller, calmer group?
- Cost — Is it free, and if not, what does it cost?
- Transportation — How will I get there, and is parking or transit easy?
- Restroom access — Are accessible restrooms available on site?
- Registration — Do I need to RSVP or confirm a spot first?
Tip: for some people, a smaller predictable event is often more useful than a larger, busier one.
November checklist — Election Day, early dark, and the holidays
For DSPs, families, and caregivers. November starts with a clock change and an election, gets dark before dinner, and ends with a holiday weekend. A few things worth checking before you commit to a plan.
- Election Day is Tuesday, November 3 — use an official drop box by 8 p.m. The Secretary of State advises mailing at least a week ahead, so if you mail now, ask the post office counter for a manual postmark. Free accessible-voting help: 1-866-673-8683 (voting details)
- Clocks fell back Sunday, November 1 — sunset is around 5 PM now and close to 4:30 PM by Thanksgiving; ease sleep, meal, and medication routines and move pickups earlier
- Health coverage windows — Medicare plan changes run through December 7 (free, unbiased help from SHIBA: 800-722-4134); 2027 individual coverage opens November 1 at ExploreHealthOR.gov and runs to January 15
- Heating bills — energy assistance runs through local community action agencies; find yours or call 1-800-453-5511, option 1
- Thanksgiving week — offices, pharmacies, and transit may change hours November 26–27; refill prescriptions and confirm DSP schedules and rides early
- Food help — Oregon Food Bank’s Food Finder and 211 list free pantries and community meals near you
- Winter-ready — flashlights, charged phones, warm layers, and a plan if the power goes out; 211 can point you to warming centers
- Exit plan — a graceful early-leave option if it’s too much today

Wellness deserves to be celebrated.
Every month, Empowered Services invites current DSPs and Empowered Choice Program providers to share one simple, privacy-safe act of self-care. These gifts are a small thank-you to the people who bring steady, compassionate support to Oregon’s I/DD community. Here are our most recent winners, from September and October.
Fresh air and rest
Congratulations to September winner Susan. One of her wellness goals is to spend more time outdoors and take more walks, so her gift was a cozy self-care basket: a soft blanket, water bottle, Liquid I.V., mug, tea, face mask, two candles, and fuzzy socks.
Joy in the simple things
Congratulations to October winner Danielle, a DSP. She has been making time for laughter and the things she enjoys most: reading, conversations with friends, shows and movies, and dog and people watching.
What is helping you feel well this month?
Share your own wellness activity for the monthly drawing. Keep your entry focused on your wellbeing and leave out customer, coworker, medical, or service details.

Ready to talk to someone?
Whether you are exploring support for the first time, ready to start services, or looking for work as a direct support professional, here is where to go next.
Not sure where to start?

Answer a few questions about your county and what you need, and we will point you to the right person on our team — with their name, not a general inbox.

Start customer intake
Begin the intake process for attendant care and the Empowered Choice Program, where you can choose someone you already trust to be considered as your paid caregiver — if they are hired and services are authorized, Empowered Services employs, trains and pays them.
