What the work is

From tying shoelaces to riding the bus.

Direct support is relational work. One day you're helping someone learn a new life skill at home; the next you're riding the bus together, building the confidence and independence that changes a life.

You'll support one person at a time — developing their current skills, teaching new ones, and helping them take part in their community. If you have a heart for people, this is work that matters.

A team that looks after its own

Supported DSPs give the best support.

Caregiving is demanding, so we invest in a wellness culture that keeps our team whole — manageable schedules, real time off, mental-health and peer support, paid training, and coordinators who check in on you, not just the paperwork.

Our core values
Integrity

We do the right thing, especially when no one is watching.

Empathy

We meet every person where they are, with patience and care.

Community

We build belonging — for customers and the team alike.

Synergy

Customers, families, and DSPs move forward together.

Advocacy

We stand beside the people we serve and use our voice so theirs is heard.

Legacy

The independence we build today keeps changing lives.

How we work

Not just a job — a calling.

We work hard, play hard, and collaborate to make a bigger impact together. We're not here to grow a big company — we're here to grow big people. That means compassionate care, real connection in the community, and a matching process that stays intentional: our systems support the work, but they never take the human initiative and discernment out of it.

Intentional matching

The right fit is designed, not guessed. Instead of asking “who can work this shift?” we ask who will help each person flourish — weighing seven signals (personality, routines, communication, goals, language, location, and support style). Our systems support the work, but the human initiative and discernment stay in it, so you're paired with the person, home, and rhythm that fit you.

DSP Referral Program

Know someone with a heart for people? Refer a great DSP and earn up to a $1,000 matching bonus — $500 after they work 20 hours/month for 3 months, and another $500 after the next 3 months at 20 hours/month.

Just have them add your name under “Recommended by” on the DSP interest form.

Connection, not isolation

Quarterly town halls to connect, celebrate wins, and shape where we're headed — plus annual company events like the Egg Hunt, Summer Picnic at the park, and Christmas Party. Local events and resources connect you and your customers in their communities, so the work never feels isolating and burnout stays at bay.

Part of the family

Not just employees — part of the Empowered family.

Our DSPs and Empowered Choice providers are family. That belief runs both ways:

We support you to support others. We care for you to care for others.

A few basics to get started
  • 18 years or older
  • For most roles: a valid driver's license, adequate auto insurance, and reliable transportation — the specific requirement is confirmed during follow-up based on the assignment
  • Comfort using a mobile phone or laptop, with WiFi or a data plan — our systems are simple, and support is always available.
  • Able to pass a state background check (we walk you through it)

Questions before you apply.

The things candidates ask us most.

Do I need prior DSP experience?
Experience helps, but reliability, compassion, safety awareness, and willingness to learn matter most. Paid training and onboarding are part of the process.
What counties do you serve?
Active support in Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas, Yamhill, Polk, Marion, Benton, Linn, Lane, Clatsop, and Columbia. We're statewide certified and welcome inquiries from all 36 Oregon counties.
Can a family member or friend become a paid provider?
Through the Empowered Choice Provider (ECP) pathway, eligible trusted family members or friends may become employees with training, structure, payroll support, and formal agency backing. Eligibility and authorization requirements apply.
Do I need a driver's license or reliable transportation?
Many DSP roles include community access, appointments, or errands with the person served, so a valid driver's license and reliable transportation are commonly required. The specific requirement is confirmed during follow-up based on the assignment.
What does the background check involve?
Oregon DSP positions require a state background check through the Background Check Unit before starting work. We walk new hires through fingerprinting, documentation, and onboarding.
Should I use Careers or DSP Interest?
Use Careers if you're ready to apply for a specific opening. Use DSP Interest if you want to share your fit, county, and availability before or alongside a formal role.
Equal opportunity employer

Empowered Services is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of every background, ability, age, race, religion, gender identity, and orientation — and we're happy to discuss reasonable accommodations at any point in the process.
