Around 1899 the dry cell and small electric bulbs made the first battery powered flashlights possible. Modern flashlights use incandescent or LED lights and can run on disposable, rechargeable, hand powered, or solar powered energy. National Flashlight Day on Winter Solstice reminds us to turn on some lights during the shortest day of the year.
