Halloween, Your Way

Halloween can be the best night of the year — or the loudest, least predictable one. Your person gets to decide what it looks like. Here are the quiet hours, low-scare parties, and daytime options we found across Oregon, with a few ideas that make the night easier.

Oct 31 is a SaturdaySensory-friendly picks

Make it fit your person

  • Preview it together — Look at photos of the place, walk past it in daylight, or read a social story first. The Oregon Zoo’s KultureCity app has one for Howloween.
  • Comfort beats costume — Soft fabrics, nothing that blocks sight or breathing, and a few practice wears before the day. Pajamas with ears count.
  • Pick the time, not just the place — Quiet hours, daytime parties, and come-anytime indoor trick-or-treats are calmer than a crowded evening street.
  • Plan the exit before you arrive — Agree on a signal, find the quiet corner, and give permission to leave early. Leaving happy is a win.
  • Make treats work for your person — Bring swaps for allergies or food preferences, look for teal pumpkins (non-food treats), or trade candy at home.
  • Communication, their way — A small card or AAC button that says “Trick or treat!” and “Thank you” lets your person join in without speaking.
  • Light the way — Sunset is around 6 PM on Halloween. Glow sticks, reflective tape, and a flashlight help everyone see and be seen.

Organized ListingsCollated by RegionOctober 2026

Choose what fits you

Every person and family is different. Before you go, a quick call or message to the organizer can confirm any of these so an outing matches your own interests, comfort, and needs.

  • Sensory level — How loud, bright, or busy will it be? Are quieter spaces available?
  • Crowd size — A large event or a smaller, calmer group?
  • Cost — Is it free, and if not, what does it cost?
  • Transportation — How will I get there, and is parking or transit easy?
  • Restroom access — Are accessible restrooms available on site?
  • Registration — Do I need to RSVP or confirm a spot first?

Tip: for some people, a smaller predictable event is often more useful than a larger, busier one.

October checklist — dark evenings, costumes, and a clock change

For DSPs, families, and caregivers. October pulls daylight out of the evening, adds costumes and crowds to the calendar, and ends with a time change. A few things worth checking before you commit to a plan.

  • Darker evenings — by late October the sun sets around 6 PM, so an evening event now ends in the dark; plan lighting and rides home
  • Clocks fall back Sunday, November 1 — the week after, sunset lands around 5 PM; ease sleep, meal, and medication routines and transport pickups ahead of time
  • Costume comfort — try costumes on early, skip masks that block sight or breathing, and bring a comfortable backup layer
  • Voting — register by Tuesday, October 13; ballots mail from October 14; free accessible-voting help at 1-866-673-8683 (details)
  • ISP and IEP check-in — fall routines are settled enough to see what is and isn’t working; call your case manager, personal agent, or school team now rather than at winter break
  • Rain and cold — rain gear, a warm layer, and an indoor backup for every outdoor plan
  • Exit plan — a graceful early-leave option if it’s too much today

Questions about this guide

How do I find events and resources in my county?
Use the county finder near the top of the page. On a computer, the Oregon map shows ten regions; on a phone, counties are listed by region. Choosing a county filters the page and opens the matching regional section.
How often is this guide updated?
A new edition is published in the first week of every month. The November 2026 guide arrives in the first week of November. Listings can change after publication, so check details with the organizer before you go.
Are these events free?
Many are. Each listing shows the cost when there is one, and every listing has a link, phone number, or email so you can check current details. Use the Free filter to see only free events.
Who is this guide for?
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Oregon, their families, direct support professionals, and care coordinators. Anyone can use it.
How do I find sensory-friendly events?
Use the Sensory filter to see sensory-friendly events, including low-sensory movie nights, quiet-hour Halloween events, sensory swims, and calmer small-group gatherings.
Where can I find low-scare Halloween events?
Start with the Halloween, Your Way section. It lists quiet hours, daytime and indoor trick-or-treats, and adaptive Halloween dances by region, with tips for costumes, communication, and leaving early. The Halloween filter shows every Halloween listing at once.
How can a person with a disability get help voting in Oregon?
Register by Tuesday, October 13. Ballots start going out October 14. Return them by Tuesday, November 3 — mailed ballots must be postmarked by that day, and drop-box ballots are due by 8 PM. Voters with disabilities can mark a ballot at home with a screen reader using the state’s online tool, and can get help from any trusted person except their employer or union. Call Oregon Votes at 1-866-673-8683 or your county elections office.
How do I suggest an event?
Email info@empowered-services.org or call (503) 855-3581. Community suggestions are reviewed for the next monthly edition.
